About IGF Mobile

The CMP Game Group established the Independent Games Festival in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development - and the main IGF Competition is now in its eleventh year.

In the same spirit, the IGF organizers announced the first-ever IGF Mobile competition in 2007 - a contest set up to promote innovation in portable games. The competition returns for its second year with a continued commitment to honoring the unique mobile-specific possibilities for games, with submissions being accepted on mobile phone handsets (such as the iPhone), PDAs, and handheld game consoles including the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.

This sister event to the IGF will have its own IGF Mobile Pavilion featuring the finalists, positioned next to the IGF Pavilion at Game Developers Conference 2009 next March, and the winners will be announced at a ceremony during GDC Mobile (and again honored during the main IGF Awards on the Wednesday night).

The competition is to award a total of nearly $20,000 in prizes to deserving indie creators in its main competition,

IGF Mobile Competition

The 2009 IGF Mobile Competition, for which the entry deadline is November 17th, 2008 at 11:59pm PDT, will give out six major awards:

IGF Mobile Best Game ($10,000)
Innovation In Mobile Game Design ($2,000)
Achievement In Art ($2,000)
Technical Achievement ($2,000)
Audio Achievement ($2,000)
The Next Great Mobile Game* - Presented by Nvidia ($2,000)

* The 'Next Great Mobile Game' award is an exciting new category in the IGF Mobile. Unlike other categories, this will feature five teams at GDC Mobile who will have to 'pitch' their idea to the audience of their peers for the chance to win the award.

There will be three specifically named finalists for each award, named in December 2007, except the IGF Mobile Best Game award (for the best game of the competition), which will have five finalists, and the aforementioned Next Great Mobile game pitching contest. All finalists will be invited to GDC Mobile and the IGF Mobile award ceremony during GDC 2008, and to exhibit their games in the IGF Mobile Pavilion, with the exception of the finalists in the Next Great Mobile Game category, where only the winner will be given the opportunity to exhibit their game in the IGF Mobile Pavilion.

The IGF Mobile competition will have a diverse, leading set of judges which include representatives from the mobile game industry, the press, and significant independent gaming websites.

Those interested in entering the 2008 IGF Mobile Competition should visit the Submit Your Game page for more information on entry deadlines and costs. For more details on rules and award categories, please visit the Awards page.
